NC Clinic Director

Meet Joe Abernethy

NC Clinic Director Joe Abernethy specializes in ADHD, executive function, social executive functioning, and parent coaching.

Joe’s interest in the neurodivergent population began in high school when he had the opportunity to complete an internship at a school exclusively for neurodivergent and special needs students. While attending North Carolina State University for his undergraduate degree, Joe worked for a local company as a habilitation technician, primarily working one-on-one with children and teens on the autism spectrum.

Following a gap year of full-time work in this field, Joe was accepted to and began attending Appalachian State University’s graduate program for speech-language pathology. While earning his Master of Science at ASU, Joe continued working with children and adults with various developmental delays, speech and language impairments, swallowing disorders, and cognitive and executive functioning impairments. He currently specializes in ADHD and executive functioning, working closely with students and parents on developing internal skills to promote independence and success in all areas of life.

“I want you to know how much of an impact you have had on [my child] ..in such a short time. He genuinely likes and trusts you. He is slowly understanding that the change and de-escalation has to start within himself. You are wonderful. Looking forward to the session tomorrow.”

“Thank you for that wonderful session. [My child] really adores you… and he listens to what you say when you explain things in such a clear language. He can follow the steps. I am so grateful we found you. Thanks again for your support.”

“Honestly, I doubted you from the very beginning when you said [my son] could successfully go to college and live away from home. But you were absolutely right. I honestly can’t thank you enough. I can’t imagine that I would ever have dreamed this was a possibility for him without your support. He is so excited about his future now. I get a little choked up when I think about the difference you made in my son’s life. I will always be grateful.”

Have Questions?

  • Do you accept insurance?

No. Executive Function Coaching is an optional non-medical service that is not reimbursable through insurance in any way, shape, or form. It is not reimbursable as there are no medical codes for it.

  • Do you do virtual sessions?

YES! They are nothing like virtual school – they are engaging and motivating. We do virtual sessions with ALL ages.
We see no difference in progress between virtual and in-person sessions. We conduct virtual sessions nationwide and internationally.

  • How does it work?

    – One 60-minute session per week.
    – No contracts/commitments (cancel anytime!)
    – There is a major focus on parent coaching and communication.
    – Every student gets an individualized plan (we do not do one-size-fits-all).
    – If you cannot get your child involved, that’s fine! The sessions can be strictly parent coaching.

  • How many sessions until I see progress? What’s the average number of sessions needed?

This is an impossible question to answer, especially before we meet the student. Please do your best not to ask it. It would also be highly unethical to answer it. Every student is different, and progress is never predicted or guaranteed. Our goal is always to make this as short a process as possible for families.
There are over 1,000 real parent testimonials on the website and GrowNOW Instagram page.

  • There is no way my child is going to agree to do this!

This is every parent’s primary concern. We have extensive experience with students who do NOT want to do the coaching program.
The GrowNOW model is different. Our sessions are highly engaging and motivating, and our students often ask for more sessions! Getting buy-in is our responsibility—not yours!

  • We have been through so many failed therapies in the past – how is this different?

We focus on the internal skills to strengthen independence.
This is NOT therapy, talk therapy, CBT/DBT, or a mental health service. This is not a structured “one size fits all” curriculum—everything is tailored to the unique individual and family.
Many of the families who contact us have already wasted thousands on ineffective therapies.

  • We want this to be as short of a process as possible for you and your family.

We do NOT focus on “client retention” and have zero interest in wasting anyone’s time or money. We are going to be very straightforward about what changes need to be made for home, academic, and social success so that we can fade back services and support as quickly as possible.

  • If you are skeptical in any way –

Please do not pursue services with GrowNOW. You should feel zero pressure to move forward with us. There are countless services out there for students with ADHD – we are just one. You know what is best for your child and family.
    Trust your gut!
